CONSTITUTED 8 JANUARY 1942 IN THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES AS 86TH ARMORED RECONNAISSANCE BATTALION, ASSIGNED TO THE 6TH ARMORED DIVISION.

ACTIVATED 15 FEBRUARY 1942 AT FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY - REDESIGNATED 86TH CAVALRY RECONNAISSANCE SQUADRON MECHANIZED, 20 SEPTEMBER 1943.

INACTIVATED 19 SEPTEMBER 1945 AT CAMP MYLES STANDISH, MASSACHUSETTS.
